U.S. Firm Files Antitrust Complaint Against Germany's SAP
A U.S. software company asked European Union regulators Tuesday to stop Germany's SAP from tactics that it says illegally exclude it from a lucrative market for programs that help companies price their products.

Austin, Texas-based Versata claims that SAP deliberately refused to share information on its widely-used business planning software, cloned its own version of Versata's pricing program and gave it away for free with SAP's planning platform.

SAP spokesman Guenter Gaugler said the company could not comment because it has not seen the complaint.

Versata's lawyer Thomas Vinje says the case filed Tuesday is very similar to complaints he led against Microsoft by software developers who accused it of refusing to supply key information to make compatible products.

Price configuration software can cost a large business some $5 million and is valuable because it helps companies allocate prices to different versions of their products or services.

Versata sold its pricing programs to companies that use SAP's enterprise resource planning software -- three-quarters of the world's largest firms -- but says it was slowly squeezed out of the market at the end of the 1990s.

It says documents it obtained from SAP during a Texas patent trial showed that SAP targeted the company because its software was "raking in the cash among the SAP customers," according to an SAP executive quoted in the papers.

Vinje said SAP created problems for Versata by refusing to give it information that would let it develop compatible programs, told SAP customers that Versata software wouldn't work with the enterprise software and then developed a similar pricing product.

Versata claims it could still be a market player if the European Commission were to act on its complaint and order SAP to provide interoperability information and detach its pricing software from its main program.

It is also calling for "appropriate fine" on SAP. EU...

New CRM software from SAP lets iPhone, WinMo, BlackBerry replace PC clients

By Jacqueline Emigh, Betanews

Sybase's new mobile sales application for iPhone, Windows Mobile, and BlackBerry lets users connect to SAP CRM remotely from their phones, much as they would from a desktop or laptop PC. And a new mobile workflow app from Sybase and SAP lets users play roles in multi-part business processes from their phones, an SAP representative tells Betanews.

With new business apps for iPhone, WM6, and BlackBerry smartphones rolled out on Tuesday, Sybase and SAP have now completed the first phase of a long-term pact around mobile customer relationship management and (enterprise resource planning software. In the week ahead, iPhone and Windows Mobile client software will be available for both Sybase Mobile Sales for CRM and Sybase Mobile Workflow for SAP Business Suite, said Prashant Chatterjee, director of mobility and industry analytics for SAP.

Chatterjee noted that RIM released a preliminary proof-of-concept client for BlackBerry about a year ago. But, he added, the existing smartphone software for BlackBerry, currently available on the Web as freeware, will be replaced during the second half of this year with a "full-fledged client."

In an initial deal announced in March 2009, the two vendors agreed to make business processes from SAP Business Suite Mobile 7 available on Sybase's Unwired Platform to all mobile devices, including Symbian and Palm devices as well.

Chatterjee told Betanews that the two companies will soon finish up a roadmap that will outline additional phases of their pact.

SAP CEO Abruptly Resigns; Co-CEOs Will Take Over
Leading business-software maker SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) on Monday announced a strategic shift in the corporate suite. Lo Apotheker has resigned as CEO and member of the SAP executive board, effective immediately. The abrupt decision came as part of a "mutual agreement" with the company's supervisory board not to extend Apotheker's contract as a member of the executive board.

Apotheker joined SAP, which is based in Germany but well-known worldwide, more than 20 years ago. The company didn't offer details on severance or his future plans.

His replacement came quickly with two co-CEOs: Bill McDermott, head of field organization, and Jim Hagemann Snabe, head of product development. Both are already executive board members. In addition, Chief Technology Officer Vishal Sikka has been appointed to the board.

Ready to Return to Growth

SAP, which is best known for its CRM (customer relationship management) and ERP (enterprise resource planning) software, is shoring up its executive direction during the transition. At the request of the supervisory board, Hasso Plattner, cofounder of SAP and chairman of the supervisory board, will play a "strong role" in advising the new leaders on technology and product development.

"The new setup of the SAP executive board will allow SAP to better align product innovation with customer needs," Plattner said. "The new leadership team will continue to drive forward SAP's strategy and focus on profitable growth, and will deliver its innovations in 2010 to expand SAP's leadership of the business software market."

The moves come just more than a week after SAP's fourth-quarter earnings report was released. The company's software-related service revenues were down five percent, service revenues were down 15 percent, and overall revenues were down nine percent.

During the announcement, Apotheker seemed optimistic, saying the company was ready to return to top-line growth. "Despite the difficult environment last year, we never lost focus...

Ocean Yacht Systems Sails Along With Epicor

Epicor Software Corporation today announced that Ocean Yacht Systems has signed a contract to implement Epicor 9, the next-generation Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system from Epicor, giving the company a centralised system for all processes from sales to production planning, inventory and warehouse management and finance. Ocean Yacht Systems is the global market leader in the design and manufacture of superyacht rigging and hydraulics - a position it has held for ten years.

The new implementation will allow Ocean Yacht Systems to streamline its processes, remove errors and duplication of tasks, control costs and achieve great efficiency across the organisation. Real-time access to information will enable project managers to cost projects "on the fly" and monitor spend against budget on individual jobs. In addition, field sales teams will be able to quote for clients with access to live data on a wide range of mobile devices, update clients on the status of orders, or check product availability.

"We chose Epicor because it provided the best overall performance and benefits for us in the long-term," said Wayne Shatwell, commercial director at Ocean Yacht Systems. "It was by far the most flexible modular-based system - I liked the notion that you can start out with a small set of modules and scale or expand at a later date with great ease. It was also the only solution presented as 'futureproof' in that all upgrades are included in the standard support contract."

The Epicor solution will replace a number of disparate applications and manual processes that came into being over the years since Ocean Yacht Systems last major systems overhaul. Epicor won the contract following a three-way review of competing solutions, which included the customers' incumbent vendor.

Shatwell added, "Epicor was by far the most versatile system offering users greater control to self manage, administer and program their own system, through business process management and reporting tools. Most of our former systems programming was entirely hard coded, meaning that any modifications to a module or report would require costly consultancy fees, for work that was not supported by our service contract."

Staff at Ocean Yacht Systems use Microsoft Office applications such as Project and Outlook daily, and integration with these was an important consideration during the review process. Epicor offers seamless integration with Outlook for tasks, reminders and e-mail notifications linked to actions in the system. Ocean Yacht Systems project managers will be able to export production plans to Microsoft Project, make changes to them, and then import them directly back into Epicor, updating the production schedules.

"Epicor is very pleased to be working with Ocean Yacht Systems to streamline their operations," said Roy Shooter, vice president sales for Epicor. "The level of integration they needed with their existing information worker environment made Epicor a natural choice, along with our cost effective maintenance programme."
