SAP Ready To Tackle Oracle in the Cloud and Database Market
Coming off a great 2011, with a 25 percent jump in software revenue, SAP is ready to set the bar even higher for the year ahead. The German-based enterprise-software maker plans to focus aggressively in the database and cloud computing market for business users, competing head on with Oracle.

On Wednesday, the company held a news conference in Frankfurt to outline a plan building on its success and targeting new opportunities.

ERP for HANA

SAP said it will support an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) module for its HANA in-memory database platform by the end of this year. The new module will include programs for financials, human resources, and operations. It will be offered as part of SAP's Business Suite product family, which is also being developed for HANA.

HANA, which uses memory to store data instead of disks, has been an instrumental part of the company's successful 2011 year. The HANA acronym stands for High-performance ANalytic Appliance, and refers to a system of hardware from third-party vendors that is optimized to work with SAP's advanced HANA technology. SAP reports that HANA's high-performance capabilities enable companies to crunch data faster and more efficiently than ever before.

Going Head to Head

Traditionally, SAP has been the king of ERP, with 24 percent of the market in 2010, followed by Oracle at 18 percent. From this position of strength, SAP said that it will use ERP on HANA as a key driver in its goal to become the leading database company.

But that is, indeed, an ambitious goal. According to industry research firm Gartner, Oracle had 48 percent of the 2010 database market, while SAP had only about 2 percent.

SAP's co-CEO Jim Hagemann Snabe told news media that in-memory database technology -- like that used in SAP's HANA appliance -- is changing the database market, and will spearhead...

Why Activity Streams Matter for Manufacturing Software
These days, activity streams seem to be popping up everywhere in enterprise tech as vendors rush to add social features to their software. Twitter and Facebook-like streams are even starting to gain traction in manufacturing software. Two of the most prominent examples of vendors incorporating activity stream data into their manufacturing user interface (UI) are cloud enterprise resource planning vendors Kenandy and NetSuite. Incorporating activity stream data into manufacturing software UIs has important implications for collaboration manufacturing environments. For instance, it enables rapid information sharing between sales teams and production teams to provide instant updates on things like purchase orders. However, I think the impact that activity streams can have on manufacturing software UIs is potentially much more interesting. Activity streams represent a radically new take on ERP UIs and have the potential to change the way users interact with their systems.

Nigeria demands IFRS compliance

The director-general of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mrs. Aruma Oteh has called on quoted companies on the stock exchange to comply with the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) before 2015.

This, Oteh said, would ensure that they are globally accepted as far as standards are concerned.

Oteh, who made this remark at the recent IFRS forum organised by Systems Applications Products (SAP) in Lagos, Nigeria with the theme “A Catalyst for Accelerated Business Growth”, said the SAP event came at a time when expectations are high from the local and the international communities on the financial performance of companies in line with International Financial Reporting Standards.

She said this would reflect the corporate financial visibility of the quoted companies and also pave the way for foreign investors to understand their balance sheets better, thereby increasing their business growth and productivity.

And speaking on the initiatives adopted by SAP in ensuring that companies conform to IFRS policy, Mr. Olivier Delcourt, business development manger, SAP, stated that SAP offers solutions to help them make a smooth, phased transition or convergence by providing a unified approach based on the company’s NetWeaver technology platform which supports all major architecture.

Delcourt said the SAP enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution supports a broad variety of consolidation and business combination methods compatible with IFRS.

He explained that SAP Business Object governance, risk and compliance solution, enables companies to integrate enterprise data and processes, delivering insight to better align business strategies and achieve financial excellence adding that IFRS has to be adopted by companies in the different sectors of the Nigerian economy and that SAP has put in measures that would hasten that development, like it did to EcoBank Transanational.

Delcourt added that SAP Business Objects software has helped hundreds of customers around the world to achieve faster time compliance, reduced reporting times, decreased consolidation time, improved transparency and visibility, enhanced compliance and increased productivity.

To cope with the changes that IFRS adoption brings, he said an organisation needs a reliable, transparent and repeatable process that maximises productivity, achieves transparency, minimises cost of compliance and increases overall financial results.

All these, he said, are the ingredients that SAP is set to deliver to the Nigerian market.

SAP Showcases HANA Tests and New In-Memory Apps
Although Salesforce.com may be the first name you think of when it comes to CRM innovation, well-established SAP refuses to be counted out of this lucrative game. In fact, German-based SAP has been firing innovative missives at Salesforce.com lately, and it's getting the attention of the enterprise marketplace.

Last week, SAP outlined an extensive road map for the coming year, including a variety of enterprise software applications based on its new In-Memory Computing technology.

In addition, SAP's quiver now includes an arrow with IBM's name on it. Big Blue and SAP just announced the first official performance results of the SAP In-Memory Appliance software, known as HANA (short for high-performance analytic appliance).

The test results, which were independently audited by Winter Corp., found that HANA can handle 10,000 queries an hour against 1.3 terabytes of data, returning results in seconds.

HANA's Heavy Lifting

This type of heavy lifting can be key to companies that need to analyze large amounts of data for sales analysis, product development, enterprise resource planning, and related business intelligence.

The test scenarios were based on query workloads that are typical of enterprise resource planning (ERP) requirements, such as those typically encountered by SAP enterprise customers.

Analytical queries in the test were designed to mirror the research needs of real businesses, such as analyzing trends in their sales history, top customers, best-selling products, customer returns, and other parameters. The tests were designed to analyze minute levels of detail, across virtually any time frame.

In one example, SAP HANA proved it could handle large and simultaneous demands for business analysis by taking on 10 analytical...

IT Software Spending Will Focus on CRM in 2011
A new survey indicates that customer relationship management (CRM) software will have the largest spending increase this year among all types of software. The survey, by industry research firm Gartner, said 42 percent of respondents expect to increase their CRM spending from 2010.

About 39 percent will increase outlays for office suites, and 36 percent for enterprise resource planning. The survey was conducted among 1,500 heads of IT departments in 40 countries through last July. The questions were oriented toward actual budgets for last year and projections for 2011.

Opportunities in 'Greenfields'

The growing increase in CRM spending comes as spending on application software in general is rising a projected 31 percent this year. The largest increase is taking place in the Asia/Pacific region, which is growing 37 percent. Latin America application spending is growing by 35 percent, and the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) region by 27 percent.

Gartner describes both Latin America and Asia/Pacific as "greenfields" with the greatest sales opportunities.

Hai Hong Swinehart, a Gartner research analyst, said key areas for general software investment include the online channel; software as a service (SaaS) deployments; and technologies that enable customer loyalty management, cross-sell and up-sell opportunities, and levels of customer service that are more targeted.

"Software application vendors should continue to build, fund and invest in software sales and marketing programs as the market is recovering," Swinehart said. He added that a market downturn and its aftermath are "disrupters that create great marketing and sales opportunities" if a company has "the right products, market programs, and funding."

Social CRM

For CRM buyers, Swinehart said, spending is focusing on customer retention and ways to enhance the customer experience, and there is increasing interest in "technologies that encourage development of customer communities and social networks."

Gartner said SaaS within the CRM industry could top $4 billion in revenue...
